Every year on February 1st, the globe commemorates International Hijab Day, which is the result of an effort started by Nazima Khan, an American teenager of Bengali descent, to raise awareness about the veil and religious tolerance.

The date on which World Hijab Day is commemorated

Nazima Khan, who left Bangladesh with her family and came to the United States at the age of 11, was subjected to many sorts of harassment, racism, and bullying at her new school, to the point where her classmates kicked her with their knees and her teacher made fun of her.

Against this backdrop, Khan intended to use social networking platforms to share her story with veiled females in non-Muslim majority nations.

Khan started her website "worldhijabday" in January 2013, and it has since received a flood of messages, both from girls like her who have been harassed for wearing the hijab and from non-veiled women who reject bigotry and support every girl's right to wear whatever she wishes.

As a result, Khan declared February 1st to be International Day of the Hijab, which was observed for the first time in February 2013. Daily.

Khan spoke to her on Twitter, saying: "To eliminate animosity, the other must be embraced for who he is. Wearing the hijab for one day aids in the fight against veiled women's discrimination."

Khan highlighted that on this day of the year, all women who wear the hijab will teach kids that whoever wears the hijab has a heart and spirit just like everyone else.

Observance of International Hijab Day

Nazima Khan continued to advocate for the celebration of World Hijab Day year after year, until the year 2017, when New York, Khan's home city in the United States, recognized the day, and the House of Commons in the United Kingdom hosted an event on the occasion of International Hijab Day, in the presence of Prime Minister Theresa May.

In 2018, the Scottish Parliament held a three-day event to commemorate World Hijab Day, and the Philippines declared February 1 to be National Hijab Day.

As part of the events of Al-Azhar Al-scientific Sharif's symposium in February 2018, Al-Azhar Al-Sharif expressed its support for the World Hijab Day initiative.

The World Hijab Day effort was not only met with good feedback, but it was also assailed by many through tweets decrying the wearing of hijabs by women all across the world as a symbol of subverting freedom.

The attack on the headscarf has been linked to the "Islamophobia" phenomena that developed throughout many Western countries in the aftermath of the September 11th attack in the United States of America in 2001, when the perpetrators were linked to their affiliation with the Islamic religion.

In Arabic, the word hijab refers to anything that veils or conceals, and it specifically refers to a woman's head and hair covering.

Some people, particularly religious people, place a high value on the veil, which some women wear in deference and respect for their religious teachings.

The Noble Qur'an is one of the divine writings in Islam that encourages women to wear the veil, and the veil is required in some Christian sects such as the Amish and Myonite, as well as nuns, and women in some Jewish, Hindu, and pagan groups.
